Maria Fitzgerald's laboratory is in the Medawar building of the Anatomy & Developmental Biology Dept at UCL (http://www.anat.ucl.ac.uk).
The laboratory has the following research aims:-
-
To provide an understanding of the neurobiological processes which underlie the development of peripheral and central pain pathways.
-
To create laboratory models of model acute and persistent pain in children and define the structural and functional effects of such experiences upon the immature nervous system
-
To assess the long term consequences of early pain and analgesia on the developing CNS.
-
To evaluate, in collaboration with clinical colleagues, the benefits of current analgesic therapies in infants and children.

Maria Fitzgerald a member of the Wellcome London Pain Consortium http://www.lpc.ac.uk a multi-faculty grouping that offers training in pain research for post-graduate and post-doctoral students from basic science and clinical backgrounds. The training emphasises integrative physiological techniques that examine genomic contributions to pain states underpinned by internationally competitive research.
